EES with children: what families need to know

Children need to be registered too. The good news: the rules for young children are lighter, and a little preparation helps a lot.

Do children need to register?

Yes. Every non-EU traveller on a short stay is registered, regardless of age. But children under 12 are not fingerprinted. They only have their facial image taken.

Tips for the first registration

Teenagers

From 12, children give four fingerprints like adults. Make sure they know to remove headphones and caps.

Travelling with one parent

EES does not change the rules for minors travelling with one parent or with other adults. Some countries may ask for a consent letter. Check the rules of your destination and departure country.

ETIAS for children

Once ETIAS launches, children will need their own authorisation. Under-18s are expected to pay no fee.
